This is Geronimo

Welcome to Geronimo! The place that feels like home, where they turn a blind eye to sin, or even encourage it ... at least when it comes to food and drink. From ordinary ‘bitterballen' to oysters: with a special selection of dishes and complementary wines, owners Angélique Coppens and Joost van Nunen ensure good food with just a touch of sin.

Q. What makes Geronimo a real Eindhoven hotspot?

Joost: The atmosphere and friendliness which are typical for Brabant. Recently, a group of about ten PSV supporters came for a beer after the match. I almost had to chase them out at midnight, haha.

Angélique: A week later, one of those men came back with his wife. We love to see it!

Q. You were open for business for three weeks, and then you had to close. That lasted seven months. What kept you going?

Angélique: This is our last chance. We want to retire in ten years. Running a restaurant is the only thing we truly want to do. That’s why we are giving it our all.

Joost: During the lockdown, we were at the restaurant from 11:00 to 21:00 every day. We delivered to people's homes, and people could order our dishes to go. That helped us gain some awareness in Eindhoven.

Q. What’s an average working day like for you?

Joost: We are on the road by 09:00 in the morning. We do our shopping, get fresh vegetables and fish. We come home at 01:00 at night. Rinse and repeat, six days a week. On Mondays, we go on a discovery tour: tasting wines and going out for dinner ourselves. That way, we can get inspiration and relax at the same time.

Q. What is the biggest compliment you have received recently?

Joost: We get signals from suppliers that this street is becoming livelier and busier in the afternoons. That is partly due to us; we are the only ones open for lunch in the afternoon.

Q. What is the star of your menu?

Joost: Our bell pepper soup. I invented that years ago. The former editor-in-chief of the Telegraaf tried it at our previous restaurant in Hilvarenbeek and wrote a piece about it. He said: 'I went out for dinner more than three thousand times, but I have never experienced anything like this in my life. Please never take this dish off the menu.' So, of course we didn’t!

Angélique: People also often order the chateaubriand, the most delicious piece of tenderloin. You can hardly find that in restaurants anymore, just like other classics such as sabayon: a delicious light Italian dessert. A bit pricey perhaps, but super tender, is Wagyu, meat from a Japanese beef. It just melts in your mouth.

Q. Is there something your guests come back for?

Joost: For the personal attention and friendliness. And of course for the quality and freshness of our dishes.

Angélique: People also come from far away. For example, a woman from Friesland has been here four times already. On her bicycle, mind you. When she goes for a bike tour, she maps out her route to come here for dinner.

Q. What is your motto?

Angélique: Eat well, sin a little. Everyone experiences highs and lows in their life, but whatever happens, it’s essential to keep enjoying yourself!
