Tips by local Daan
Hi, my name is Daan. I originally come from Heeze but moved to Eindhoven many years ago. The people and the opportunities offered by the city meant that I have remained here ever since. Given my background in the hospitality industry, I have always been interested in coffee; the flavour, the roasting process and the entire atmosphere surrounding the product.
In 2012 I started roasting my own coffee, first from my own kitchen. Shortly afterwards I launched a pop-up coffee bar at the clothing store Wildenberg / Ynformal on the Kleine Berg, selling my own blend of roast coffee, Blend 801. Wildenberg / Ynformal is a store that often features eye-catching, creative presentations either in the store, or in the shop window. It is a spacious store selling high-fashion gentlemen’s clothing. In other words, the same level of quality I aim for.
There are now a number of outlets in De Bergen district, where you can enjoy Eindhoven-roasted coffee, including the recently opened café Berlin, a small premises with an industrial feel, right in the middle of the Kleine Berg, that harks back to the atmosphere of East Berlin. Here, four different coffees are served, specially blended by myself, for Berlin.
As well as coffee, I love good quality food. I often visit Restaurant 1910 on the atmospheric Wilhelminaplein square. Not only do they serve delicious food, but also remain accessible to a wide public. What makes the restaurants at the square so delightful is the possibility of eating your meal outdoors.
By the way, did you know that Restaurant Wiesen on the Kleine Berg was awarded one Michelin star in 2014? Eindhoven is really on the culinary map! And that is why I stay here, too. Another place to be and a household name in Eindhoven is the Italian restaurant Mangiare, where business has been excellent for at least 20 years.
At Brewpub Van Moll, the only Eindhoven-based beer brewery, I joined Erwin and Jaap Van Moll in creating a beer with coffee in it, entitled ‘Ons Blacky met DENF’. A fun experiment, and it tasted delicious, too.
