10 must sees during DDW

From 20 until 28 October, Eindhoven is all about design. The biggest design event in Northern Europe presents work and ideas of more than 2600 designers to visitors from home and abroad. Dutch Design Week (DDW) organises exhibitions, lectures, award shows, networking events and other festivities in over hundred locations across Eindhoven. Don’t know where to begin? We get you started with these 10 must sees during your visit to DDW.

If you are interested in the innovative character of design, Strijp-S is a not-to-miss stop during your visit to DDW. Mind the Step and other exhibitions in the Klokgebouw show us how design, thanks to research and technology, plays an important role in the society of the future. You can also visit the first edition of DDW Live, where you can sit and listen to talk shows, radio, lectures, and presentations. The imposing Veemgebouw (former Philips storage house) provides a platform for young talent and innovative ideas, and Ketelhuisplein is a hotspot with various exhibitions, DDW Music acts and food trucks.

Like every year, Piet Hein Eek will present his new collection during the Dutch Design Week.  Don’t forget to visit the Young Designer and Small Studio exhibitions while you’re on site. As an extra, Piet Hein Eek's workshop will be transformed into a restaurant on 25 and 26 October, where Michelin-star chef Sergio Herman will prepare a 5-course dinner for 180 guests. Would you like to join? Don’t forget to make a reservation!

Plan-B might be an odd one out in terms of location, but it’s certainly worth a visit. The former Philips lab on industrial estate De Hurk has turned into a creative hotspot in recent years. The exhibition Alter Ego by Kiki & Joost reveals their different talents: sculptor, poet, treasure hunter, composer, social activist, parent, crazy professor, painter, baker, and gardener. These different characters and viewpoints feed their inspiration. Each project is the result of one of the personas. In addition to Kiki & Joost, you will find the work of another 30 designers at Plan-B; from established names to young talent.

Open studios and unique exhibitions in a singular environment. On the Hallenweg, Vij5 explores the boundaries of crowdfunding by inviting the community to influence one of the most essential choices in a design process; choosing colour. Close to the Hallenweg, in the little church of Atelier NL, you will find Embassy of Water. This platform investigates future-oriented partnerships aimed at achieving a sustainable, water-friendly society.

ONGOING DIALOGUE celebrates the role of the design community in establishing Kazerne, combining recent works by old friends with brand new talent in the former military barracks. The exhibition shows various concepts and installations with urgent themes such as impermanence, imperfection and the role of technology in daily life. Combine your visit with good food and drinks.

Modebelofte is an annual presentation of some of the brightest talents in fashion, who graduated from either Dutch or international academies. The theme for this year - Shape Shifters - refers to the essential need of humans to transform. While you’re there, pay a visit to the Embassy of Mobility, where current challenges and the future of mobility are explored.

Dutch Invertuals is a changing design collective, curated annually by Wendy Plomp. Wendy is one of the ambassadors of Dutch Design Week this year.
The world’s population is skyrocketing at a staggering pace, virtually every modern technology has been invented, and the consumption of non-essentials has become a part of our daily lives. While it has always been in our human nature to strive for “more”, Dutch Invertuals presents TAKE AWAY, offering experimental design concepts on shifting it to “less”, investigating what it means to “take away”.

Campina Melkfabriek

Open to the public since recently and already a DDW hotspot! The Graduation Show 2018 will be the first edition in almost two decades to take place outside the walls of Design Academy Eindhoven. G18 presents no less than 208 projects by 185 graduates. While you’re there, visit ROBOT LOVE, an interactive exhibition about the love between humans and robots, and Wood in Progress, the sequel to the experimental collaboration between design collective Envisions and Spanish wood manufacturer Finsa.

Section-C is a dynamic site on the outskirts of Eindhoven, with various design studios, gardens, stages, exhibitions, and laboratories. Collaborations between 180 creative entrepreneurs, artists, and musicians make it a true DDW hotspot every year. If you are interested in food design, the following two initiatives are a must. The Zuiderzee Museum presents temporary coffee bar 'Zuiderzee Coffee & Polder Waffles', where you can taste coffee and sweets prepared according to old, Zuiderzee customs. Food Design Studio THE EATELIER and chef PIPPENS experiment with happiness and how you can cultivate it through food in 28 Grams of Happiness.
