Beginner's guide: How to celebrate Carnival in Eindhoven
When you see everyone dressed in wild costumes and you’re greeted with a cheerful “Salaai!”, you know Carnival in Eindhoven is in full swing. Here’s a short Carnival survival guide for every newcomer to the party.
When can I celebrate Carnival?
You don’t want to be the only one in full costume when the party hasn’t started yet. In Lampegat, as Eindhoven is called during Carnival, the party starts on Friday, 13 February, and lasts through Tuesday, 17 February (for the real die-hards).
How should I dress up?
Actually, you can't go wrong in Lampegat – people even dress up as bananas. No need to worry about getting into a bar because of your outfit, unlike in other cities (unless you’re dressed as a giant Christmas bauble and can’t fit through the door). Originality is always appreciated, as is a nod to current events. If you have a hard time getting your costume organized, get some inspiration from your favorite Netflix series.
Where can I buy Carnival clothes?
If you're all in for Carnival, the outfit hunt starts months ahead! Vintage stores like YATVA or Second Floor are goldmines for unique pieces you can mix and match with what’s already in your closet. Want to design your own outfit? Get your fabrics and threads at 't Smitje on Kleine Berg. Or, if you prefer the full package, check out one of the many Carnival shops around town. Who will be Prince(ss) Carnival?
Each year, the identity of the “Prince or Princess Carnival” – the city’s Carnival prince or princess – is Eindhoven’s best-kept secret. The big reveal takes place at the Federation Ball, held on the Saturday before Carnival. Around midnight, last year’s Prince or Princess steps down and ‘De Neie’ (Brabantian for 'the new one') reveals their identity. It’s always a great party, and one you can be part of.
As the temporary figurehead of Lampegat, the Prince or Princess Carnival and their entourage help set the festive mood throughout the city. Chances are you’ll run into this Carnival royalty at some point: from the parade to all the parties, they’re right where the fun is.
Is there a parade too?
You bet! The parade is the perfect way to soak up the Carnival spirit! Grab a good spot along the route and enjoy the incredible floats and costumes – all the result of months of hard work by carnival groups. It’s always a blast and a great place to bring the kids. This year, it’s happening on Saturday, 14 February!

What to do?
All over the city, there will be parties, from pubs and bars to special marquees on the Markt, Stadhuisplein, and Wilhelminaplein. Of course, Carnival songs are an essential part of the fun, along with the famous 'polonaise' (the Dutch version of a conga line). Click here for this year's best parties.
What’s for dinner?
Think of anything with lots of carbohydrates and fats. Sausage rolls (‘worstenbroodjes’), frikandels and french fries are popular options. Here are some spots for a proper snack. Enjoy them while you can, because according to Catholic tradition, Lent begins after Carnival. 'Ash Wednesday' marks the beginning of this fasting period with the eating of herring.
