7x Green hotspots

Eating, picking, discovering and simply seeing where your food comes from can be done in a surprising number of places in Eindhoven. Scattered throughout the city and its green spaces, you’ll find all kinds of green hotspots where nature, craftsmanship and local food come together: from flower gardens where you can pick your own bouquet, to urban farms, food forests and shops full of fresh regional products.

Bloemenpluktuin Eikenburg

Take the scissors in your right hand, the bucket in your left, and pick a colorful bouquet for yourself or as a gift! In June, the picking season at Eikenburg begins. Until mid-October, you’re more than welcome in their vibrant flower garden. Join one of the workshops or take part in activities such as the butterfly count, music in the garden and picnicking on the estate. And if you can’t get enough of picking flowers, get a subscription and treat yourself to a summer full of blooms!

Philips Fruittuin

Freshly picked straight from the orchard and placed right on the shelf, apples and pears don’t get any fresher than at the Philips Fruittuin (Philips orchard). And did you know that in the fall you can pick your own apples and pears? While you’re there, be sure to try one of their delicious juices. In the farm shop, you’ll find not only products from the Philips Fruittuin itself, but also artisanal and organic regional products. Think freshly baked spelt bread, cheese from local cows and forgotten vegetables that are simply  too delicious to stay forgotten. Want to taste all those goodies before buying them? Then take a seat in the pancake restaurant. Alongside artisanal pancakes, the menu also features delicious sandwiches and soups made with products from the shop.

Phood (Community) Farm

At Phood Community Farm, you experience the entire farming process from beginning to end. On the edge of Eindhoven, you’ll find the urban farm of Phood Community, where together with other gardeners you discover how to plant, care for and harvest crops. Enjoy the fresh air, seasonal vegetables and herbs all year long. You will gain knowledge about growing vegetables and meet new people. You not only build knowledge about growing vegetables, but also get to meet new people. Curious whether urban farming is for you? Sign up for a trial day!

At Phood Farm at De Caai, things work a little differently. There, this is where the same owners run an aquaponic farm, growing all kinds of vegetables, herbs and mushrooms indoors. They do this by growing crops in water where fish swim (hence the term “aquaponics”). The fish provide nutrients to the water through their waste, allowing the plants to grow. In turn, the plants help keep the water clean for the fish, completing the cycle. During a tour, take a look inside this unique farm and learn all about aquaponic farming. Phood also sells everything they grow in their shop.

Landwinkel Genneper Hoeve

Not butter, but a delicious piece of cheese, eggs and products fresh from the farm, you’ll find it all in the farm shop at Genneper Hoeve. Fill your own bottle at the milk tap, pick up a hearty sourdough loaf and cool off on the patio with a farmer’s ice cream. Want to know where all the products come from? Then take a look in the meadows or barns, where you can see cows, chickens, pigs and geese. Or would you like to try the products first? Then you really should take a seat at the tasting room, where you can sample their homemade cold cuts, vegetables and cheese.

Het Wasven

A market garden, an artisanal bakery, a coffee roastery and a restaurant: all in one place. At Wasven, they truly do it all. They grow products such as honey, vegetables and herbs on their own land. They also roast their own coffee and bake delicious breads. All these products are available in their shop, but you can also enjoy them in the restaurant. Alongside their own products the shop also offers drinks and other products from local entrepreneurs.

Voedselbos Eindhoven

On the edge of Strijp-R lies the Voedselbos, a place where nature is free to do its thing. Among the trees and plants, you’ll find all kinds of edible species, from herbs to fruit. You can not only wander around and discover what’s growing, but also take part in all kinds of activities. Think guided tours, volunteer workdays and workshops where you learn everything nature has to offer. Simply experience, taste and do it yourself. At the Food Forest, they also work on increasing biodiversity and improving soil health, together with nature.

Bijentuin Sint Ambrosius

Busy bees, pay attention! In Tongelre, on the edge of the city, the Sint Ambrosius Eindhoven beekeeping association manages a garden full of beehives. From mid-june you can buy a jar of honey there, fresh from the bees. Curious about what happens inside a hive? Catch one of the beekeepers in their bee suit: they’ll gladly show you around.
