With the help of this series, you will get to know Eindhoven from A to Z. Starting with the A of ... Area51! No, we're not talking about a mysterious military base here. We're talking about the largest (!) indoor skate park in the Benelux.
Skaters, BMX'ers, steppers, and other daredevils brave Area51's wooden halfpipes daily. Young or old, professional or for fun: everyone is welcome to show off their skills and tricks. But Area51 is much more than a skate park. You can also learn hip-hop, break dance, or practice your spoken word. Nowadays, you will find Area51 in the vibrant district called Strijp-S, but it used to be different (history lesson incoming). The area was only open to Philips employees; hence, people called it 'the forbidden city.' The building of Area51 was a former tool shop and was among the first with a new purpose after Philips left.
But what else does Area51 have to do with Eindhoven besides its location? Eindhoven is a city of urban culture, and this is due to initiatives and creative breeding grounds like Area51, youth center Dynamo—where talent development has a prominent stage. The two form EMOVES with The Ruggeds, an Eindhoven group of dancers and world-breaking champion. An urban trio that organizes the annual Urban Culture Weekend. Add to that the vibrant graffiti scene, which originated in the late 1980s, and Eindhoven can rightfully call itself the urban capital of the Netherlands.
Whether or not you're aching for a new hobby or not, stopping by Area51 is an absolute must. Have you never done skating before? You certainly don't have to be a pro to take a class; dancing is fun, too. Rather watch? Go to the bar and enjoy a tasty (and very affordable) grilled cheese with the best view of the track. Would you like to show off your moves but not sure if the daylight can bear them? Rave away in the party basement (a mini-Berlin). Before we forget: Besides all the activities, numerous events are hosted here, such as the World Streetboard Championships. Be there, or be square!
