DDW-tip: Klokgebouw

Going to Dutch Design Week? One place that definitely belongs on your list is Klokgebouw at Strijp-S. Below we tell you why.

Where?

Klokgebouw, Strijp-S (the name of the street is also Klokgebouw)

Need a ticket?

Yes. Get yours here.

How to get there?

The Klokgebouw is right next to the Strijp-S train station. It is a large white building with a blue clock; you can’t miss it. Are you coming from the city center? Hop on bus 401, 402, or 403. You can do so at the Central train station or the stop in front of MediaMarkt. Get off at the Strijp-S bus stop. You can also take the train to Strijp-S station, or take one of the Design Rides. These are electric cabs that drive you around for free if you have a ticket. You can recognize the cabs by the artwork on the roof. The Design Rides stop at Ketelhuisplein, Stadhuisplein, Fuutlaan, Sectie-C, and Piet Hein Eek.

Why do you want to come here?

Klokgebouw is the perfect basecamp for your DDW adventure. You can easily spend a couple of hours there, and there's plenty to see and do. Sustainability and technology are always big themes at Klokgebouw during Dutch Design Week, but there's plenty of room for young talents too!

Our recommendations

  • Class of 26: Meet the next generation of creators from no less than 18(!) different (inter)national design academies, including Vilnius Academy of Arts and the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.
  • We Harvest Wind: It doesn’t only look great, but this installation by eco-artist Thijs Biersteker and Polestar also has an important message. Made with biodegradable glue, it shows how we should deal with renewable energy in the future.
  • Hey Theys!: Looking and listening is fun. But at Dutch Design Week, you probably want to do something too. At the interactive installation Hey Theys!, you talk about gender and sexuality with other visitors, including people you've never met.

Opposite Klokgebouw, you'll find Ketelhuisplein, with numerous exhibitions. Time to spare? Be sure to check out Plug-in-City for sixteen extra design projects and the impressive Trudo Toren, covered in trees and plants. Photos of this architectural gem always do well on your timeline.

Other fun things to do in the area

Be sure to take a peek inside Area51, the largest indoor skate park in the Benelux. Nearby, you'll find Urban Shopper: an indoor shopping center where you can score exceptional items at one of the twenty stores.
