Walls with Paint: Danny Rumbl

In 'Walls with Paint', Eindhoven local, photographer, and art fan Lukedaduke shares the story behind a special street art project in Eindhoven. This month: Danny Rumbl's tunnel mural in Acht.

Sometimes you have to go beyond familiar ground, even in Eindhoven. It will bring you a whole lot of good stuff. Outside of the city limits, gems are waiting for you to discover. For example, like the one in Acht, under the railroad tracks at the end of Waalstraat.

In 2020, Danny Rumbl made a tunnel mural here, commissioned by the municipality of Eindhoven. Danny is an artist living in Rotterdam who is mainly known for his colorful and playful characters.

Maybe you recognize the characters: Hannah Barbera and Nickelodeon cartoons, Disney characters, and even nods to mascots of fast-food chains. He gets his inspiration from contemporary pop culture, or rather, the pop culture of Rumbl’s youth.

On the city's outskirts, you will regularly find street art gems. So be sure to look for them!

Danny is not a single-minded artist. Besides murals, he also works on illustrations, publishes booklets of his work, paints on canvas, and makes three-dimensional woodworks. Back to street art, because in addition to his tunnel piece, he manages to find his way back to Eindhoven more often, thanks to the annual graffiti festival Step in the Arena.

The tunnel underneath the tracks in Acht is full of birds, painted in Danny’s famous cartoon style. The local birds are all present: a blackbird, a sparrow, or a robin. Are you inspired to see more of Eindhoven? Be sure to check out the city borders, and don’t skip this tunnel!
