Walls with Paint: Space3

In 'Walls with Paint', Eindhoven local, photographer, and art fan Lukedaduke shares the story behind a special street art project in Eindhoven. This month: A recognizable image by Space3 on Kanaaldijk-Noord.

On the corner of the Tongelresestraat and Kanaaldijk-Noord, across the street from DAF Museum, stands a white building: the studio of John Körmeling.

This artist/architect finished a study in architecture at the local university TU/e. In the Netherlands, he is famous for the Spinning House in Tilburg or the small, pink-colored house at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.

On the outside walls of his studio, you can find two images. The bottom one is by an artist I mentioned before: Jeroen Erosie. He painted the blue and white piece in 2019 as a birthday gift for John.

Most people recognize the image as a sticker: the Evoluon with Mickey Mouse ears

Jeroen started as an illustrator and graffiti artist. Through the years, his work became more and more abstract. Sometimes you can still recognize letter shapes in his street art. But most of the time, you will spot work inspired by architecture or coincidences in form. He takes it all in when he’s out on his bike.

The other image is a lot older and made by Space3. Most people from Eindhoven will recognize the image because it has been around on the streets as a sticker since the ’90s: the Evoluon with Mickey Mouse ears.

The image ended up on the studio wall of John as a poster. And when the image left hold of the wall, John went up and restored the painting himself with paint.

Space3 and John Körmeling continued to work years after that, among other things for Happy Street, the Dutch pavilion for the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.
